With the increasing awareness of climate change we want to discuss the ways menstrual products affect our environment. An individual goes through approximately 11,000 disposable pads and/or tampons in a lifetime, and in 2016 the Marine Conservation Society found 20 tampons/sanitary items per 100 metres of shoreline. Concerned with the ever-growing number of sanitary products ending up on landfill and in our seas, a number of companies and charities have come up with various alternatives to the conventional ways of managing one’s period.
We believe choice is paramount, so this isn’t a push for what to wear, but how we can acknowledge a broad range of issues in the discussions surrounding menstrual freedom. Today there are several environmentally friendly period products available including reusable pads, reusable tampon applicators, period underwear, and menstrual cups. Keep an eye out for our next post which will discuss the Moon Cup, which is one of many innovative, modern, eco-friendly alternatives in the strive for environmentally friendly options! ALSO a massive thank you to the amazing @ffionbyrne for her wonderful illustration!
